BRIGHTON HOMES ARENA

HOME OF THE BRISBANE LIONS

SPRINGFIELD, QLD, australia

A new benchmark in the rapidly expanding women’s sport market combined with outstanding community facilities.

INTRODUCTION

Brighton Homes Arena in Springfield Central has been designed from the start to provide equal high-performance facilities for the Brisbane Lions’ AFLW and AFL teams, as well as to create the first purpose-built AFLW Premiership match facility in Australia.

As a great new community precinct, it was equally important to the Lions, Government and the AFL that the Arena catered to a wide variety of recreation, health and community needs for Queensland’s second fastest growing region at Springfield. Over 50% of Brighton Homes Arena has been designed for community use, from meeting spaces and function rooms, café and parkland to a community gym, pool and wellness centre filled with elite level equipment.

Connecting Springfield Central with new suburbs to the north and existing public transport at Springfield Central Station, Brighton Homes Arena also brings together the Lions’ staff and players under one roof. In the past, the men’s women’s and Academy squads have trained at multiple locations across Brisbane

The design has taken to heart the need to weave together the long and proud history of the Fitzroy Football Club with the success and distinctly sub-tropical Queensland home of the Brisbane Lions. Brunswick Street Oval, the Lions’ spiritual home in Fitzroy provided the early design inspiration for the Grandstand and architectural elements including the red brick and exposed concrete that has been used across the site; while the traditional timber ‘Queenslander’ family home with its high ceilings and wide verandas has also influenced the design, inside and out.
